The Ramble is a unique and much-loved feature of the Castlebar International 4 Days’ Walks, cherished by our international walking community. First introduced with just a dozen dedicated participants, it quickly became clear that the Ramble would grow into one of the most iconic elements of the Castlebar Walks. While the original 40km road walk initially drew overseas attention, it was the Ramble—nurtured by a core of committed local walkers—that carved out its own special place at the heart of the festival.

Each Ramble lasts approximately five hours and takes participants deep into the remote and rugged terrain of County Mayo. These are not gentle country strolls—walkers will traverse bog lands, heather-covered hills, and uneven, often wet ground. The routes include moderate climbs and cover a variety of challenging surfaces, rewarding participants with spectacular views and an unforgettable experience of Ireland’s wild west. On a clear day, the views stretch seemingly forever, but walkers must be prepared for all weather—this is a true off-road adventure.

Because the Rambles take place in exposed and remote areas, having the correct equipment is essential. The weather can change quickly, and the terrain can be demanding.

Walkers must have a good level of fitness and be properly equipped to handle the conditions safely and comfortably.
